A Wing and a Prayer

John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.

When you pray, who do you pray to? It may seem like a bit of an odd question, but who we think God is, is of ultimate importance. We can either go to God in the right way, or the wrong way. Who is God to you?

Prayer is a funny thing. Consistently, surveys show that just over seventy percent of all people claim to have prayed at least once in the last month. That means they’ve turned to God – whoever God is to them – and spoken with Him.

But most of the time, most of us … well, we just kind of wing it. We live life on a wing and a prayer, hoping that a quick prayer to the Big Fella up in the sky in some time of crisis will do the trick (whoever that “Big Fella” happens to be).

But Jesus made an outrageous claim. He said:

John 14:6
I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.

In effect, Jesus is saying this. There are lots of gods that people worship, either vaguely or quite deliberately, but there’s only one true God, His Father in Heaven. And no one – no one – can come to the Father except by believing in, by putting their trust in, Jesus Himself.

Honestly, I used to think that this whole notion of there only being “one way”, as it were, was a recent invention of a church that had grown altogether too big for its boots.

But it turns out that it was Jesus who said it – the same Jesus who suffered, who died on that cross for you and me. It’s a truth that He attested to with His very life.

I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me. – Jesus

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
