All the Power You’ll Ever Need
Ephesians 1:17-20 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know … what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places (NRSV)
Here’s something that I know is bothering many a person who believes in Jesus. Why is it so difficult to overcome that one temptation, that one sin, that keeps bringing you down? Why is that?
It took me a while, and perhaps I’m a slow learner, but finally I realised that I cannot overcome my sin in my own power. You may have noticed that too.
In fact, the harder you work at it, the more you fail. So, as far as I can see, working harder at becoming a “better Christian” is a recipe for a life filled with guilt and condemnation.
What we really need, you and I, is power – I mean serious power – to overcome our sin. And not surprisingly, God’s already thought of that. Through the Apostle Paul He tells us something startling:
Ephesians 1:17-20 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know … what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places (NRSV)
Here’s what’s so startling about this: according to the Holy Spirit working here through the Apostle Paul, we already have available to us the same immeasurably great power that raised Jesus from the dead, to give us a new life. In other words, the incredible resurrection power to overcome your sin, is available to you, now, today, through Jesus.
So, stop praying for power, and start praying with power.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
