Avoid This Bad Habit
Hebrews 10:23,24 et us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NRSV)
When you and I place our confidence in ourselves, in our own abilities, we can quickly end up being over-confident. But when you place your confidence in God … well, you can never be over-confident in Him.
As we saw yesterday, we can hold fast to the confession of our hope in God because … He is faithful; ever faithful. He’ll never, never fail you. That’s fantastic news, particularly when your faith’s feeling a bit wobbly.
But doing that on your own, maintaining your confidence in God in isolation, even for the strongest and the most ardent among us, can be a struggle. So …
Hebrews 10:24,25 … let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NRSV)
Our faith, our confidence in God, is like a muscle. It has to be exercised for it to remain strong. That’s why hanging out with fellow believers – loving each other, serving each other, meeting together – is such a powerful habit to be in.
And failing to do so is the worst habit you can possibly fall into, because God made us to be a family where, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we support, serve and encourage one another. That’s how you remain strong in your faith. It’s called “church” – although there are many different models of being together as the body of Christ.
But however you choose to do “church” … do not neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encourage one another.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
