Expecting Mediocrity

1 John 4:9 This is how God showed his love to us: He sent his only Son into the world to give us life through him.

So, it’s that time of year again. We’re heading towards Christmas, yet again. And no doubt you’ve been mixing it with the crowds to get your Christmas shopping done.

We live in a world where, more and more, we’ve come to expect mediocrity. So when you walk out of a department store, having just received really good service, it’s like, “wow! That was amazing. I can’t wait to tell someone about it.”

Amidst all the mediocrity in this world, great service is becoming so rare, that we’re almost shocked when we’re on the receiving end of some. Am I right? And sadly, mediocrity begets mediocrity. It’s so easy for us, for you and me, to slip down to that standard.

That’s why Christmas is such an amazing time. When people are crowding into the shops and doing the things we do to get ready for Christmas – well, what a perfect time to remember that Christmas has nothing whatsoever to do with mediocrity.

1 John 4:9 This is how God showed his love to us: He sent his only Son into the world to give us life through him.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever thought of it this way, but what we’re celebrating at Christmas is the fact that God was prepared to give us His Best. The very Best of the best. Jesus His Son. That first Christmas was so carefully planned. It was a plan that had been in the making since before time began.

A plan for God to send His Best, to save the very people who’d rebelled against Him and rejected Him.

That’s what Christmas is all about. God’s very Best.

This is how God showed his love to us: He sent his only Son into the world to give us life through him.

Jesus. That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
