If Only I Could Ask

1 John 5:14,15 And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. (NRSV)

Here’s the crazy thing. We each have something – one thing more than any other – that’s going on in our life that we wish we could change, that we wish God would change, that we wish could just be solved, fixed or made to go away. Question: why aren’t we knocking God’s door down in prayer to make it happen?

Today is a day like any other. Sunrise, breakfast, work, lunch, work, dinner, some TV perhaps and then it’s off to bed – just another day, same as every other day. At least, that’s what you thought it was going to be.

But just as the evening news is finishing on the television, there’s a knock at the door. So you go to answer it. It’s a man you don’t know, but somehow, he’s vaguely familiar. There’s just something about him.

He says, “Hi, I’m Jesus and I was wondering whether we could have a cup of coffee together for an hour or so?” Deep down, you know it’s Him, so you let Him in and put the kettle on and sit down for a chat.

So here’s your opportunity. You can ask Him for … well, anything that you want. So what would you ask for? I mean, what’s the deepest cry of your heart, the one thing in your life where, if God could make a difference for you right now, that’s what you’d want Him to do for you?

Maybe it’s your marriage, or loneliness, or something from your past that keeps haunting you. Perhaps it’s financial worries, fear, one of your children.

If you could ask Jesus for anything, just one thing, what would it be?

1 John 5:14,15 And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. (NRSV)

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
