We’re Just Not Having Any Fun Anymore

Song of Songs 2:10-13 Arise my love, my fair one and come away. For now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come and the voice of the turtledove is heard in the land. The fig tree puts forth its figs and the vines are in blossom, they give forth their fragrance.

If you’re married – do you remember during those early years of your marriage; how much fun you had together? There seemed to be so much laughter, so many crazy things the two of you did together.

So, all these years on, how much fun are the two of you having now? It’s a pretty scary question, that. Once upon a time you were having so much fun together, but now … well, you know.

Fun isn’t just doing the routine things that you have to do every day, every week, to live life and get by. No! Fun is laughing, joking, kidding each other. Fun is doing things together that you both enjoy. Things that leave you breathless. Things that leave you exhilarated. Things that you’ll look back on in your later years, that’ll just make you smile.

Remember that? Fun. It’s an attitude, it’s a desire, it’s going and doing outrageous things together because you want to, because you can.

Okay, so you have excuses. Me too. Work, kids, pressures, stress, mortgage, arguments. I know you have excuses.

So what we do in our marriage, is that we plan to go out and have fun together. What I’ve discovered is that unless we’re deliberate about it – it just ain’t gunna happen.

So, one of my jobs as husband, is to have ideas, plan to do things. Why don’t we drive down to the coast, and take our dog for a walk and have lunch together on the weekend?

Why don’t we go out for breakfast on Friday morning? Why don’t we … do this, or do that.

Unless you’re deliberate about it, you just find yourself stuck in a rut. Because life is full of ruts. It’s full of responsibilities. And when we’re under pressure, we retreat back into the same old, same old … boring, mundane stuff. And before you know it, not only are you not having fun anymore, but if feels like an eternity since the idea of fun even entered your mind.

Come on, fun is an attitude of the heart. It’s a decision you make.

Arise my love, my fair one and come away. For now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come and the voice of the turtledove is heard in the land. The fig tree puts forth its figs and the vines are in blossom, they give forth their fragrance. (Song of Songs 2:10-13)

Husband loves wife. Wife loves husband. Go have some fun.

It’s just not that complicated, you know.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
