Learning to Laugh Again
Ecclesiastes 9:9 Enjoy life with the wife you love. Enjoy every day of your short life. God has given you this short life on earth-and it is all you have.
The evidence is in. In fact the experts tell us that the evidence is absolutely irrefutable: laughter is good for your health.
A good laugh relaxes the muscles in your whole body for a good forty-five minutes. It boosts your immune system. It triggers the release of endorphins which make you feel happy, and even relieve pain. And it protects your heart by increasing blood flow. Pretty good eh? All from a good laugh.
And can I tell you something else that laughter does. It relieves the stress in your marriage. My wife Jacqui has a whacky sense of humour – it’s one of the things I love the most about her. It doesn’t seem to matter what sort of a foul mood I’m in, when she laughs, the weight of the world lifts off my shoulders, especially can I tell you, when she’s laughing at herself.
So many marriages are teetering on the edge and yes, look, every marriage has its issues. Sure, there are pressures, there are tensions … the things you used to find endearing about your soul mate are now driving you crazy. That happens in every marriage. But today, I believe God just wants to remind you not to forget to have a good laugh together from time to time.
Enjoy life with the wife you love. Enjoy every day of your short life. God has given you this short life on earth-and it is all you have. (Ecclesiastes 9:9)
The original Hebrew word used in that verse for “enjoy” means to see, to perceive, to look at each other face to face.
Remember the fun you used to have? Remember how much you used to laugh together? Do you remember that? Husbands look into the face of your wife. Wives, look into the face of your husband. See what you first saw in your soul mate.
Go and do some things together that are fun, things that will make you laugh together again.
Husbands, enjoy life with the wife God has given you. Wives, enjoy life with the husband that God has given you. Enjoy every short day of your life, because this is the life that God’s set aside for you and it’s all you have on this earth.
So … this is it … have a good laugh together, would you please?
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
