Losing to Win

Luke 9:24 Any of you who try to save the life you have will lose it. But you who give up your life for me will save it. It is worth nothing for you to have the whole world if you yourself are destroyed or lost.

From very early on in life, we’re taught that it’s far better to win than to lose. Everything seems to be so competitive and yet, winning, as they say, ain’t everything.

A while back, I interviewed a woman, Alex, who works in Asia amongst people affected by leprosy. Now, in her previous life, she’d lived in an incredibly privileged environment by any world standard. But then, she and her husband headed off to live and work amongst the poorest of the poor.

She was telling me how she washes the feet, and cuts the toenails and dresses the wounds of people with weeping sores. She showed me the photos. It was horrific!

But as she was speaking to me, I could see the overwhelming joy, the sparkle in her eyes. And when I asked her about her life, how she felt about doing what she was doing, she said, “I feel so privileged.”

You know, I wonder whether you and I haven’t been conned by this whole thing that’s been drummed into us; that it’s better to win than it is to lose. So we get out there and try to stuff ourselves full of as much as we can get a hold of, more and more, and yet, so many people are so miserable. Come on, you know what I’m talking about!

What if we’ve got it wrong, and the Alex of this world have it right? Hmm? Jesus said that if …

Luke 9:24 Any of you who try to save the life you have will lose it. But you who give up your life for me will save it. It is worth nothing for you to have the whole world if you yourself are destroyed or lost.

The more you experience of life, the more that rings true, doesn’t it?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
