Milk and Honey
Exodus 3:17 I declare that I will bring you up out of the misery of Egypt, to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.’ (NRSV)
There are so many good things – great things – out there for you and me to spend our money on; so many more things than there were, say, when I was growing up. So how come people aren’t happier now than they were back then?
The other week I was pretty sick with some virus. My throat was hoarse, my temperature was up, and I just felt so drained – no energy at all. And somehow, instinctively, my body craved for some warm milk and honey.
As I sipped on it, the energy just flowed back and I felt much better. It’s a great combination, that – milk and honey. When the body needs that special something, that combo of milk and honey is just the best.
It’s a combo that God actually has something to say about.

Isn’t it amazing that when God promised Israel its own land, He promised them a land flowing with milk and honey? So simple, so beautiful.
I sometimes think that we all too easily miss the simple, beautiful things that God puts around us just to strengthen us, to bless us, to encourage us, to make us smile.
We get so carried away with the things that we think are important that we miss those exquisite things that God wants to bless us with. Why is that? What is it that makes us want to settle for second best; to rush to the chemist and buy disgusting throat lozenges instead of just have some simple milk and honey?
Why do we do that?
I don’t know, but I think sometimes we just miss the point.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
