Need a Feed
Psalm 63:5,6 My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips when I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. (NRSV)
There’s a strange thing going round these days. It’s this sense that even though we’ve stuffed ourselves full of all that this world has to offer, somehow we’re still empty, restless, dissatisfied … left with this sense that there must be something more.
I’m one of these crazy people who likes getting up really early in the morning – three to three thirty normally. I love it!
As a result, by around seven o’clock, I’m famished. So it’s breakfast time. I was munching my way through some bacon and eggs the other morning and I thought, “Isn’t it amazing? Most of us eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day – day after day after day.”
Sure, we can skip a meal or two without much problem but if we go hungry long enough, we starve. And if we starve long enough, we die.
What if that’s how we are spiritually, too? What if our spirit needs feeding, just like our stomach? What if, if our spirit starves for long enough, we die?
My hunch is that spiritual starvation is out there in plague proportions. Israel’s King David, when he was on the run for his life, starving out in the wilderness of Judah, had this to say to God:
Psalm 63:5-8 My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips when I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. (NRSV)
It turns out that there’s more to being satisfied than with food – much more. We can stuff ourselves full with food and everything else that the world has to offer, but without God we will never be satisfied.
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

I am truly thankful for the soul food I receive when I read your messages. Sometimes I wonder how I would have coped if I lived in the times of the old testament!
