No More Profanity
Psalms 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. (NRSV)
How often have the words that passed over your lips, the things you’ve blurted out without thinking, landed you in hot water? I’d hazard a guess that the answer is … more times than you can remember.
Don’t worry, it’s not just you. Me too! And when you’ve said it, you can’t unsay it. When you’ve hurt someone’s feelings, you can’t unhurt them. When you, in your moment of glory, have made yourself look like a complete idiot, you can’t wind that back.
But there’s a whole other level that goes even further. It’s the level of profanity – of swearing, of painting grubby images with your words. D.A. Ovieda put it like this:
Ungodly language creates an immoral and unspiritual atmosphere which is hostile to clean thinking and living. Profanity disgraces the user and demeans the hearer.
Pretty strong stuff … and very, very true. Dirty language has no place – no place – coming out of the mouth of someone who professes to believe in Jesus, the Son of God, who suffered and died for them. None! Profanity disgraces the user and demeans the hearer.
Is that really what you want to do by that slip of the tongue, allowing foul language to come out of your mouth? I seriously doubt it. Which is why King David of Israel prayed this prayer:
Psalms 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. (NRSV
What a great prayer. So, if you’ve been in the habit of swearing, ask God for His help. Ask Him to set a guard over your mouth and keep watch over the door of your lips. And have no doubt – He will.
