Overcoming Disappointment

Romans 8:24,25 We were saved to have this hope. If we can see what we are waiting for, that is not really hope. People don’t hope for something they already have. But we are hoping for something we don’t have yet, and we are waiting for it patiently.

I’m sure there have been people in your life over the years who have disappointed you. And not just people … situations, circumstances. You save up for a nice holiday and it falls short. It disappoints. Tragic really.

Disappointment is a pretty common reaction to something or someone that falls short of our expectations. And yet people and circumstances often fall short.

A couple fall in love, get married, expect the years to be the perfect romance – and with all the pressures of life it’s anything but, some days. And when you think about it, if we yield to that disappointment it can have such a destructive impact, not just on that marriage, but on our relationships and life in general.

Whilst disappointment is a common reaction, if we wallow in it, it’s also an incredibly destructive one. What to do …?

Well, I think that it all comes down to in whom or in what we place our hope. Disappointment after all is all about the gap between our expectations and the outcomes.

Life without hope, frankly, ain’t worth living. So, where is your hope?

Romans 8:24,25 We were saved to have this hope. If we can see what we are waiting for, that is not really hope. People don’t hope for something they already have. But we are hoping for something we don’t have yet, and we are waiting for it patiently.

In this world we are going to have trials, people are going to fall short of our expectations and there are going to be disappointments. But when our hope is set on Christ … honestly, those pass quickly and pale into insignificance. Your hope in Him is the one thing that will never disappoint you. Hope in Him, wait patiently and you will be rewarded.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
