Protection When You Need It
Psalm 34:7,8 The Lord’s angel builds a camp around his followers, and he protects them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. (NRSV)
Something that quite frankly irritates me is when you’re going through some difficult time and some “Christian” comes along and trots out a trite little Scripture, as though that’s going to make it all better. That really bugs me!
You often hear Scriptures quoted out of context. Like this one: taste and see that the Lord is good. It’s often used in a happy-clappy sense. Well, that’s fine I guess, until you’re in that place where everything seems to be going against you … where you’re completely exposed, completely alone on the earth.
And at that point, a trite little scripture like that is completely useless to you … until you realise that there’s more to it. Would you like to hear all of it?
Psalm 34:7, 8 The Lord’s angel builds a camp around his followers, and he protects them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. (NRSV)
Oh yeah! Because when you’re in that dangerous, vulnerable place, when you feel completely exposed, completely alone, the angel of the Lord has already encamped around you to keep you, to protect you, to hold you safe.
And it’s in that place, assailed by all that this world can throw at you, besieged by all that the devil can muster … listen to me, it’s in that fearful place that you get to experience God for real. That’s when you discover that He is good, when you take refuge in Him.
This is one of those promises from God that you can stand on in those darkest of places … and when you do, He won’t fail you.
The Lord’s angel builds a camp around his followers, and he protects them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
