That Something

John 12:47 “I did not come into the world to judge people. I came to save the people in the world. So I am not the one who judges those who hear my teaching and do not obey.”

Many people … most people, I suspect … go through life with a nagging sense that something is missing. It’s this sense that although I’m living a two-dimensional life, there must be a third dimension that I haven’t discovered yet. Something … is missing.

Life slips on by inexorably. The seconds, minutes, hours, days … months … years … and yes, the decades.

Some days, life’s great and that’s as it should be – other days, not so great, and other days downright awful. And then there are those days in between when you realise that although everything looks fine, there’s still something missing. It’s hard to put your finger on. You can’t give it a name, but you know there must be something more.

It’s not religion you’re looking for. Religion is about rules and rituals and recriminations. No, that’s not what any of us are looking for. There must be something more!

Of course there is: Love, a Father’s Love: Life, a new life. Jesus said,

John 12:47 I did not come into the world to judge people. I came to save the people in the world. So I am not the one who judges those who hear my teaching and do not obey.

Save? Save? From what? From that something, that something that’s hard to put your finger on.

Personally, I never thought I needed saving from anything. A bunch of things in my life were going really well, but I, like most, knew there was still something missing.

All these years on from having first encountered Jesus, I think I’m pretty certain I know what I needed saving from; me, myself and I.

I was the problem – my stinking attitudes, my selfishness, my short-sightedness – that’s what I needed saving from. What about you?

I didn’t come to judge you. I came to save you.

Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
