The Blessing of Obedience
Deuteronomy 28:12 The LORD will open his storehouse where he keeps his rich blessings. He will send rain at the right time for your land. He will bless everything you do. You will have money to lend to many nations. And you will not need to borrow anything from them.
As any parent will tell you, obedience has its rewards. A rebellious child will suffer the consequences of discipline. That’s as it should be. An obedient child will be granted more liberty, more blessing by mum and dad, because … well, that’s just how it works.
And that’s precisely how it works with God, too. There’s a reason that one of the ways God gives us to understand Him is to refer to Himself as God the Father.
Immediately, that picture breathes a whole world of understanding into our idea of who He is and how He behaves. None of us can possibly misunderstand the natural outcomes, both of obedience and disobedience, in the relationship between a father and his child, now can we?
So you have to ask yourself, why is it then that we so often stray from what we know to be right? Why is it that we choose to walk in disobedience to God when we know that obedience holds a world of blessing for us – blessing that flows directly from the hand of God,
And precisely the sort of blessing for obedience that Moses was talking about …
Deuteronomy 28:12 The LORD will open his storehouse where he keeps his rich blessings. He will send rain at the right time for your land. He will bless everything you do. You will have money to lend to many nations. And you will not need to borrow anything from them.
The truth is that we’re all tempted to walk in disobedience from time to time. You are, I am. The next time you’re tempted, remember this: God your Father longs … yearns … to bless you in ways that will absolutely floor you, in ways that you could never, ever … ever have imagined, in ways that are tailor-made for you.
And those blessings flow directly out of your obedience.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
