The Dummy

Hebrews 4:16 With Jesus as our high priest, we can feel free to come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we receive mercy and kindness to help us when we need it.

It’s amazing how easy it is to miss the obvious. Sometimes the solution to our dilemma can be sitting right under our noses and we just can’t see it. So when you’re hurting, when the pain inside is so bad that you just want to scream, the solution is right there under your nose.

I was on a plane just the other day as I seem so often to be, and just as we began the descent … it happened. It always happens! All the babies started screaming. Have you ever noticed that? I feel for them.

The pressure changes, their ears hurt, and so they scream. There’s a simple solution, of course. If only they kept sucking on their dummies, or their pacifiers or whatever else they’re called these days, the pressure behind their eardrum would equalise and the pain would go away. But the more you try to help, the more they scream because they just don’t understand that. All they know is that it hurts a lot!

Whenever the pressure changes, it hurts. Not just air pressure, but life’s pressures. They’re all around us: work, family, money, health, relationships – you name it – when the pressure changes, it hurts. When the pressures of life push in on you from every side, it hurts! And when it hurts, we scream – sometimes on the inside, sometimes on the outside.

Now, there is a simple solution: Jesus. Now, He’s no dummy. But when He whispers into your heart, when He touches you where it hurts … wow, He knows how to ease the pain. But sometimes the more He tries to help, the more we scream.
