The Fruit of Your Labours

Proverbs 20:4 Some people are too lazy to plant seeds. So at harvest time, they look for food and find nothing.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation that’s a bit difficult, a bit confusing, and you start thinking to yourself, “Why doesn’t God get in here and sort this out? God, what are you doing? Why are you holding back?”

You’ve no doubt heard it said that God helps those who help themselves. In fact, most people think that it’s a verse out of the Bible. It’s not. You can read the Bible front to back, and you won’t find it.

But you will find something that sounds a lot like it:

Proverbs 20:4 Some people are too lazy to plant seeds. So at harvest time, they look for food and find nothing.

It’s not always easy to strike the right balance in our relationship with God, between us on the one hand making things happen, and on the other, getting out of the road to let God do the things that only He can. Sometimes we want to race ahead of Him and make things happen when He’s not ready. Given my personality type, that’s something I’m perhaps more prone to than others.

But at the other end of the scale, some just want to sit there on the couch expecting God to do it all and then when He doesn’t, they whinge and complain.

So what about you? At what end of that scale are you … or are you perhaps somewhere in the middle? I’ll let you be the judge.

But whoever we are, whatever our natural disposition may be, listen to this – unless we plough and sow, there simply won’t be anything there at harvest time.

So as you survey all that lies before you, what are the bits that God is calling you to do? What soil should you be ploughing, what seeds should you be planting right now?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
