The Getting of Faith

Ephesians 2:8-9 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about.

Faith is something we all need from time to time. The problem is, in those difficult times when we need it the most, it often seems to elude us.

People talk about having faith as being a good thing, and of course it is, but where do you find it? When the going gets tough, when the dark clouds appear on the horizon and then the storm hits you at full force and rocks your world, how exactly do you lay hold of the faith you need?

Conjure it up, pretend you have it, try to convince yourself that you’re a man or woman of faith? Yet, all it takes is a little pinprick to burst that balloon.

As things turn out, faith isn’t something we create for ourselves.

I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

So, faith is a gift from God so that none of us can boast about it. But still, where do you find that gift?

As I’ve wandered along the long, hard, lonely roads that life sometimes takes you on, I’ve looked for it. Under this bush, around that corner, expecting to find a bright, shiny package labelled “faith”.

I never did find it, until one day I turned and looked back down the dusty road that I’d been on, and I saw all the amazing things that God had already done. And as I looked at the faithfulness that He’d shown me, time and time again – that’s where I found it, kind of hidden, tucked away… deep in my heart.

God’s faithfulness gives us our faith.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
