The Getting of Wisdom
James 1:5-8 Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom. But when you ask God, you must believe. Don’t doubt him. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is blown up and down by the wind. People like that are thinking two different things at the same time. They can never decide what to do. So they should not think they will receive anything from the Lord.
I don’t know about you, but there are times in my life when I’m faced with a complex issue, or some dilemma and I know I need wisdom to handle it, wisdom that I just don’t seem to have. Now what?
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but there’s a big difference between “smart” and “wise”. It’s great to be smart but wisdom is much better. And wisdom is something that’s available to all of us.
Look, it’s not easy when you’re faced with some complex, difficult situation that involves risk or pain, because in that place, what you really need is the wisdom to get through. And yet it’s right there in the middle of those times that you end up feeling so inadequate. It feels as though wisdom completely eludes us. So, what do you do? Where do you turn? How do you get the best wisdom on offer?
James 1:5-8 Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom. But when you ask God, you must believe. Don’t doubt him. So they should not think they will receive anything from the Lord.
God’s promise is that right in that moment when we need it the most, all we have to do is to ask Him for His wisdom and He’ll give it to us, generously and ungrudgingly.
So, is there any pre-qualification to the getting of this wisdom? Just one. Ask in faith. Ask believing that He’ll give it to you and He will.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
