The Serenity Prayer (2)
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to tell people his message: “Change your hearts and lives, because God’s kingdom is now very near.”
Sometimes in life we feel like we’re the victim. And of course, sometimes we are. The question is though, how long are you going to play the victim? When do you get up and start turning things around?
Maybe you’ve recently heard me talking about the Serenity Prayer. You know the one:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
That second bit is interesting. The courage to change. It’s interesting because sometimes, we like to play the victim. We like to whinge and complain and grumble, but when it comes to changing things that we know that we can and should, “Ahhh … no thanks. I think I’ll stay right here in my comfort zone and just keep complaining and blaming everyone else!”
The easiest thing in the world is to blame everybody else for our woes. It takes courage to fess up and own our part of the problem. It takes courage to admit that we’re not perfect. It takes courage to go to God and ask for His forgiveness and His wisdom and His power to change.
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to tell people his message: “Change your hearts and lives, because God’s kingdom is now very near.”
The actual word that Jesus uses there is “repent” It means to turn your life around. To turn away from the stuff that you know is wrong and back to God.
It takes courage to turn your life around. Maybe it’s hard. Maybe it’s scary. But it’s the path to the new life, the abundant life that Jesus came to bring you. Is it worth it? Absolutely it is.
Repent, for the kingdom of God is near!
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
