Things Money Can’t Buy
John 4:46,47 Jesus went to visit Cana in Galilee again. Cana is where he had changed the water into wine. One of the king’s important officials lived in the city of Capernaum. This man’s son was sick.
It’s so easy, isn’t it – whether you’re rich or poor – to imagine that money can solve all your problems? We know that’s not true, but we cling onto that lie all too often for dear life.
If only money were the solution to all our problems. All we’d have to do is work harder, earn more and hey presto, problem solved. But no matter how important we are, what rank or station we hold, how much we earn, it doesn’t work that way.

In his commentary on this passage, R Kent Hughes writes this:
There are many things money cannot buy. Money can buy a king-sized bed, but it cannot buy sleep! Money can buy a great house, but it cannot buy a home! Money can buy a companion, but it cannot buy a close friend! Money can buy books, but it cannot buy brains! Money can buy a church building, but it cannot buy entrance into heaven!
The point is that life’s biggest problems can’t be solved with money. Life’s deepest needs can’t be purchased with money. And in this case, money couldn’t save the life of this man’s son. Only one thing could. The power of God in Jesus Christ.
John 4:50,51 Jesus answered, “Go. Your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus told him and went home. On the way home, the man’s servants came and met him. They said, “Your son is well.”
There are some things that money simply cannot buy. They tend to be the most important, the most valuable things in our lives. The answer for those is Jesus.
