True Democracy
1 Timothy 2:1-3 First of all, I ask that you pray for all people. Ask God to bless them and give them what they need. And give thanks. You should pray for rulers and for all who have authority. Pray for these leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of devotion to God and respect for him. This is good and pleases God our Saviour.
Democracy around the globe, right at the moment, seems to be a sick little puppy. There is so much entrenched tribalism between left and right, so much arguing, so much deep distrust and even hatred, where is it all going to end?
When I was a lad, I remember seeing a TV show where one man told a rather colourful Government minister of the day, that the only thing he liked about this politician was his flamboyant shirt. My dad smiled, and said, “That son is real democracy, when you can say that to a government minister.” And I guess it is.
But irrespective of our individual political views, the easiest thing for us to do is to knock our leaders. To complain about them. To tell them what they’re doing wrong. That’s democracy too.
But … I wonder how many of us think to pray for them.

I know a few politicians, and they come in for a roasting so often – from the people, from the press, from their opposition … and even at times from their own party.
It’s a tough gig. And I know that it’s something we often don’t think of doing. But how about praying for your political leaders. We may be too small to influence policy, but by praying for our leaders, we’ve already done the single most powerful thing we can do!
Pray for your politicians.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
