When the Flowers Fall
Isaiah 40:7-8 When a wind from the LORD blows on them, the grass dies and the flower falls. Yes, all people are like grass. Grass dies and flowers fall, but the word of our God lasts forever.
Sure, we live our lives as though they’ll go on for ever, even though they won’t. We know that, but, then, we just go merrily on, as though nothing is ever going to change.
Can I be blunt and direct with you today?
I used to watch those Christians wandering into their churches on Sundays and think to myself, “You’re kidding! What a bunch of losers. They sing songs, they pray and some guy preaches. So what?! Look around, that’s not where it’s at. Look at the things you can buy in the shops and the fast cars and big houses and all that stuff. That’s where it’s at.”
If that kind of rings a chord with you – can I share this wakeup call with you today? It comes from the Bible … yeah, I know, just humour me. The Prophet Isaiah writes this:
When a wind from the LORD blows on them, the grass dies and the flower falls. Yes, all people are like grass. Grass dies and flowers fall, but the word of our God lasts forever. (Isaiah 40:7-8)
Sure, sometimes those Christians aren’t all that impressive. In fact, sometimes, they’re downright awful. And sure, you can’t actually see God, but all these things we can see today – one day, they’ll all be gone. And we can’t take them with us, then what? When the grass has withered and the flowers have faded, then what?
Well, I’ll tell you then what – then the Word of God will stand forever. It’s a sobering thought. It’s meant to make a difference to how we live our lives today.
So, again, humour me. Let me be blunt and direct with you. It doesn’t matter what in this world is important to you. One day it will be gone and just one thing will be left standing.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
