Your Protector
Psalm 18:1,2 I love you, LORD! You are my strength. The LORD is my Rock, my fortress, my place of safety. He is my God, the Rock I run to for protection. He is my shield; by his power I am saved. He is my hiding place high in the hills.
Personal safety is one of our highest order needs. It follows on immediately after having enough air to breathe if there’s an imminent threat. Often times, it even comes before our need for water, food, shelter and clothing.
As someone trained in the art of warfare, I can tell you that the reason soldiers dig trenches in their defensive positions is for protection. We used to groan on exercise when, after a long day of patrolling and fighting mock battles, we’d have to dig those wretched trenches before being allowed to sleep – until one day, they showed us what artillery and fighter jets can do to a hilltop with trenches. We never complained again!
There are times in life when you and I need protection – be it physical, emotional or spiritual. Young David, before he became king of Israel, was hunted by King Saul who wanted to kill him. After being saved from his enemies, David wrote these words:
Psalm 18:1,2 I love you, LORD! You are my strength. The LORD is my Rock, my fortress, my place of safety. He is my God, the Rock I run to for protection. He is my shield; by his power I am saved. He is my hiding place high in the hills.
Those words come from bitter, real-life experience. It was in the midst of those battles that David discovered the faithfulness of God. So, when the artillery starts lobbing in on your life, when the planes are dropping their bombs – whatever that may look like for you – know this.
God is your rock and your fortress; your hiding place in the hills. He is your shield and your protector. Never forget that, because …
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
